Visa question
I plan to go back to China in December when I graduate, and hope to work. I already have a company that wants me, but when they called the Beijing work bureau, it said I needed to have two years work experience before getting a permit (prerequisite for a Z visa). So, that kind of visa is out of the picture, I think. Could I go job searching with a tourist visa and then switch once I got hired? Or should I do a business visit visa? I want to be legit, since I plan to stay for some time. What are your guys' suggestions, experiences?
The two-year requirement is not universal to all fields and may not even be an official requirement, but rather, the whim of some bureaucrat. At the foreign school where I taught, three of our teachers had only one year of experience.
I myself came into China twice on a tourist visa and obtained a proper Z visa while in China. On one of the occasions, I was stranded in Seoul and explained the situation up front to the consular staff, who cheerfully sent me back to Qingdao with a tourist visa.
I have heard from other expatriates that it is difficult to impossible to arrange a work visa while in China on a tourist visa.
Expats in Beijing or those who work in your field could best advise you.
My feeling about China is that anything is possible with the right connections and for the right money.
