BEIJING, Jan. 5 (AP) -- China warned Google and other popular Web portals Monday that they must do more to block pornographic material from reaching Chinese users, the latest in a series of government crackdowns targeting Internet content.
The crackdown focused on pornography but is part of a larger Chinese effort to control freedom of expression and root out material it considers destabilizing, such as sites that criticize the Communist Party, promote democratic reform or advocate Taiwan independence.

BEIJING, Jan. 5 (AFP) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao used one of his last official conversations with US counterpart George W. Bush to voice confidence that bilateral ties would remain strong, the foreign ministry here said.
Hu made the remark while talking to Bush by telephone late Sunday local time, a little more than a fortnight before president-elect Barack Obama moves into the White House.
"In a new historical period, China and the United States will definitely be able to stick firmly to the overall direction of a relationship characterised by constructive cooperation," said Hu.

Rice Cancels China Trip to Deal with Gaza

WASHINGTON, Jan. 4 (Reuters) -– Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has canceled a trip to China this week because of the crisis in Gaza where Israel has launched a ground offensive, the State Department said on Sunday.
Rice had been set to leave for China on Sunday, with stops in other Asian destinations. But in an indication of deepening concern over Gaza, the State Department said her deputy, John Negroponte, would now go in her place.

Former Dairy Head Pleads Guilty

SHANGHAI, Dec. 31 (NYT) -- The former chairwoman of the Sanlu Group, one of China’s biggest dairy producers, pleaded guilty on Wednesday to selling fake and substandard milk powder, helping trigger one of the country’s biggest food safety crises, according to the state-run news media.
The former executive, Tian Wenhua, is one of the highest ranking corporate executives ever to go on trial in China and could face life imprisonment or even the death sentence, according to legal experts and the local media.

I was one of those people the guide refers to as having “mismanaged his life back home.” The truth is that I was a drunk and a total fuck up and I moved to China to teach English for peanuts because I had nowhere else to go and nothing else better to do. BEIJING, Dec. 31 (AP) -- China's president called for faster reconstruction during a visit to the devastated Sichuan province where many victims of May's massive earthquake are facing a cold winter.
President Hu Jintao spent three days in Sichuan, state media said Tuesday, visiting victims, relief projects, and inspecting rebuilding work in the area surrounding Wenchuan, the epicenter of the 7.9 magnitude quake that left nearly 90,000 people dead or missing.

Dinosaur Find in Zhucheng is World’s Biggest

ZHUCHENG, Dec. 30 (Guardian) -- China claims to have found the world's biggest deposit of dinosaur bones in the old city of Zhucheng in Shandong province on the country's eastern coast.
Workers digging along a 300 metre slope on the outskirts of the city unearthed a densely packed layer of fossils that could be more than 100m years old. The state news agency Xinhua said that 7,600 samples had now been discovered, mostly dating from the late Cretaceous period, the era when dinosaurs are believed to have become extinct.

Reporting from Foshan, China -- The last time his parents saw Liao Mengjun alive, he was heading to school to pick up his junior high school diploma.
A few hours later, they were called to the morgue. They found that their lanky 15-year-old son's forehead had been bashed in. His right knee jutted through the skin. Both his arms had been broken. He had several stab wounds, internal injuries and a swollen foot.
